The Sound of Music is certainly one of the world’s best loved musicals. Fans rejoice as the loveable Maria and the Von Trapp family are back in Singapore and due to popular demand, this well-loved musical has been extended, the show will be running from now till 3 December 2017 at The Mastercard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands!
The multi-award winning production comes from the West End musical theatre, the famous London Palladium has achieved a stunning record-breaking of 954 performances and over 2 million people have watched the show. In July/August 2014 when The Sound of Music came to Singapore, almost 70,000 people have watched the production during its five-week season.
The Sound of Music is actually based on a true story of Maria, the cheerful, high-spirited governess who look after Captain Von Trapp’s 7 children. She brings music into the family and change their lives. She also married Captain Von Trapp and as tensions arise prior to the outbreak of World War II, the whole family escaped across the Austrain mountains.
Audience will be charmed with this timeless classic story and filled with some of the most memorable songs ever like Do-Re-Mi as above, My Favorite Things, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, The Lonely Goatherd, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Edelweiss, and most definitely, the title hit song, The Sound of Music.
Audience in Singapore can also look forward to see our local talented children performing in the musical featuring 18 of Singapore’s most able young actors and actresses will play the coveted roles of 6 of the 7 Von Trapp children, with three children chosen to alternate each character. The roles are the girls’ characters as Marta, Brigitta, Louisa, adorable Gretl and the boys’ characters as Federich and Kurt.
Carmen Pretorius performed the lead role of Maria Rainer and she has brought the character Maria to live, with her outstanding performance and melodic voice. It is a joy to hear her belting out all the memorable songs in the musical.
Janelle Visagie, a seasoned classically trained soprano in her home country of South Africa played the iconic role of Mother Abbess who is always understanding and provides guidance to Maria helping her to find out what she needs in life. You will be mesmerised with her powerful vocal especially when she sang the song, ”Climb Ev’ry Mountain”.
Now comes the man of Maria’s life, Captain Von Trapp, strongly portrayed by Nicholas Maude, the no nonsense father who heads the family with military style till Maria comes into his life. Both Carmen Pretorius and Nicholas Maude has such wonderful chemistry together as Maria and Captain Von Trapp.
