Starting October 4th, 2024, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the enchanting worlds crafted by Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli at the highly anticipated “The World of Studio Ghibli” exhibition at the ArtScience Museum.
This groundbreaking exhibition, organized in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, marks the studio’s first showcase in Singapore. It delves into the iconic animation, storytelling, and beloved characters that have captured the hearts of audiences worldwide for nearly four decades.
A Legacy of Enchantment and Innovation
Founded in 1985 by directors Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, alongside producer Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli is celebrated for its enchanting films that range from magical adventures to charming tales based on everyday life. The studio’s influence on the animation industry is profound, with its films earning critical acclaim both in Japan and internationally. Studio Ghibli’s masterful hand-drawn visuals, intricate world-building, rich characters, and universal themes have inspired generations of animators and storytellers. Notably, seven of their films have received Academy Award nominations, with “Spirited Away” (2001) and most recently, “The Boy and the Heron” (2023) winning Best Animated Feature. In 2024, Studio Ghibli made history by being the first group to be awarded an Honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, recognizing their outstanding contributions over the past 40 years.

Main highlights include 16 large-scale theatrical sets that transport visitors into iconic scenes from the movies, such as waiting in the rain with Totoro, entering Howl’s Moving Castle, and hopping on a train with No-Face. In addition, 16 whimsical art installations will offer a more intimate exploration of Studio Ghibli’s creative processes. The exhibition will conclude with a retail shop featuring official Studio Ghibli merchandise and souvenirs designed exclusively for this presentation at the ArtScience Museum.
Celebrating Extraordinary Women
Launching as part of ArtScience Museum’s ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’, “The World of Studio Ghibli” also aims to spotlight the diverse female protagonists featured across the studio’s films. These characters, often depicted as strong and independent, embody values such as compassion, love, tolerance, and respect, resonating deeply with audiences through themes of nature, environmentalism, coming-of-age, self-discovery, technology, and war.
