The Magic Paintbrush Musical Review
The Magic Paintbrush is about the story of a boy named Toni Lee who like most children in Singapore have to struggle and cope with school exams and parents’ expectations. One day, he was transported back in time to a Southern Province of China after a strange encounter with a Magical Paintbrush from the book he read. He made a wish that he would like to be the book’s main character, Ma Liang. Magicially, he became Ma Liang and together with the melodious Phoenix who aided Ma Liang in his quest against the comical Palace Guards, Sotong and Shrimp, as they try to capture Ma Liang for the cruel, greedy Emperor and his wicked schemes! Ma Liang would have to use his wits and courage together with the Magical Paintbrush to help him and his friends escape from the Emperor.
Jodi Chan played the lead role as Ma Liang, she is truly outstanding in her performances for portraying the poor student having to struggle with both school and parents’ expectation and her transformation to the young and coureagous Ma Liang in the battle against the Palace Guards and Emperor.
Audience will also enjoy comic relief from the two palace guards, Shrimp and Sotong with one of them being so “sotong” which means blur. They were both entertaining and provided much laughter throughout the show. Another highlight is the Phoenix, Amanda Tee was the voice behind the Phoenix, she has such a good voice and we enjoyed listening to her singing.

The cast of The Magic Paintbrush are brilliant in their performances and they have such great chemistry with one another including interacting with the puppets. Children were delighted to see the colourful and lifelike puppets. Overall, The Magic Paintbrush is a great local production, it is a delightful and highly entertaining show that the whole family can enjoy! Don’t miss it!
You can take picture with the wonderful cast after the show at the Meet and Greet Session. The Magic Paintbrush will be performed at the Drama Centre Theatre from 27 October till 12 November 2016.

The Magic Paintbrush was first produced in 2000, and now reworked and re-visioned for the 21st Century, this is truly pure gold for the whole family!
Take a well-known and well-loved Chinese folk tale, add a multitude of marvellous, madcap characters and stir together with a highly talented cast of established local actors, and bright newcomers, and then fill the whole thing with a host of lively, memorable tunes, slapstick comedy, and just a dash of suspense. What do you get?
The Magic Paintbrush is a musical treat, where any child over the age of three can bring their parents, and older brothers and sisters, aunties and uncles to watch with marvellous music, puppets and lively action that will enthral the youngest audience members, whilst a witty script will entrance grownups and older children.
The story is about Toni Lee, a youngster from present-day Singapore is struggling with the pressures and stress of schoolwork and parental expectations. With an accidental wish, Toni quite unexpectedly meets a Magical Paintbrush, and is transported back in time to a Southern Province of China, where, in a series of magical adventures, Ma Liangs story unfolds. Meet the tuneful Phoenix who guides and helps Ma Liang with his quest. Watch out for the comical Palace Guards, Sotong and Shrimp, as they try to capture Ma Liang for the cruel, greedy Emperor and his wicked schemes! Through the fun and laughter, a clear and strong moral message about the value of creativity, friendship, and the dangers of using, or abusing power is presented in this magical, musical family show. This wonderful play will be performed in English.
