The Ant and The Grasshopper by I Theatre returning after a SELL-OUT run in 2014, is a bright, breezy musical this is suitable for the whole family, filled with colourful characters, puppets and tuneful, catchy songs, based on the very famous Aesop’s Fable.
Once there lived a hard-working and ever-busy Ant who never seemed to have time for play or relaxation.
And then there was Grasshopper, with time on his hands and nothing much to do all day. Somehow they were friends.
All day long Ant would work hard, without stop or rest, collecting grains of wheat and storing them carefully in her larder.
Grasshopper would always laugh, and say. ‘Why waste the sunshine in labour and toil?’
But Summer does not last long – and soon Winter and the frozen cold will come…
What will happen to Grasshopper then?
This is a fast-paced and interactive production that is full of fun, specially created with the younger – Primary and Pre-Primary audience in mind, but with unexpected twists and turns to keep even the grownups engaged, involved and on their toes!
Our Parenting World Review:
Our Parenting World’s Junior Reviewer, Vincent watched The Ant and The Grasshopper on 18 February 2017 and here’s his review on the show:
We are all familiar with the classic story of The Ant and The Grasshopper, I Theatre makes the play even more interesting by adding more likeable characters like the two high energetic Bees, Nessa, the Caterpillar who is afraid of changes and Lady Co Co, the Ladybird who likes to make a grand entrance aka likes to show off in addition to the two main characters, the hard-working Ant and the carefree and laid-back Grasshopper.

Throughout the show, we enjoyed the lively singing and dancing by the cast. Criminy, the Grasshopper played good music and entertained the audience with his ukulele. Expect lots of interaction with the cast. You can sing, dance and even do a simple exercise with them. My little brother excitedly participated and shouted out the answers to the cast when they asked questions. He is worried for the Grasshopper when winter comes, he does not have food to eat and is relieved that the Ant offered to take him in and fed him so that he will not go hungry. This play highlights to us the importances of friends and the value of true friendships.
Thank you to I Theatre and the fabulous cast for the wonderful performances!
We enjoyed this fun and meaningful play that teaches us, how important it is to have time management, learnt to balance between work and play and to be prepared for the future. There is a time to work and a time to play!
The play will explore key themes of: friendship, rewards for hard work, how to use your time wisely, balancing the arts, leisure and work, how to work smart, generosity and judging others.
Experienced and top class and multi-talented performers Alecia Kim Chua, Erwin Shah Ismail, Elizabeth Loh and Safia Hanifah bring the story to life. Erwin was nominated for the Life Theatre Awards as Best Supporting Actor for his role in this production!
Julian Wong composes the unforgettable and fun songs, and Cathy Kee creates the fun and crazy choreography. The specially created costumes and puppets have been designed by the best of local and international craftspeople. The show is set in the wonderful, magical tiny world of the insects.
