Media Invite and Musical Review: Mulan The Musical 木兰少女 now showing at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa
Many of us have watched Mulan the movie previously. In fact we know of two of these movies, ranging from the one produced by Walt Disney which was a cartoon animated movie released in 1998 to the Chinese movie on screen starring Zhao Wei in the year 2009.
We are all familiar of the story of how Mulan, the filial and brave daughter disguised as a man to take her aged father place in the army. Our Parenting World team is very excited to catch Mulan the Musical now showing at Resorts World Sentosa. It is interesting to know that this musical is a theatrical romantic comedy from Taiwan that has given this well known century-old legend a different twist to the story.

The musical was originally written by playwright Tsai Pao-Chang as a stage play and it won first prize in a literary award by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government in 2007. It was turned into a musical with composer Owen Wang coming onboard for the National Taiwan University’s Department of Drama and Theatre’s tenth anniversary in 2009.
The musical is performed mainly in Mandarin with some Singlish in between. The story started off on how Mulan joined the military pretending to be a male (taking up the name Mulan) and with the General eventually falls in love with her.

1. It is funny. Unlike the movie, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior starring Zhao Wei which sometimes maybe too serious, this musical is more light hearted and humorous. We thoroughly enjoyed this musical that makes us laugh away!

2. Although the musical is from Taiwan, there are well-known Singaporean cast like Pierre Png and Ann Kok in the supporting casts. The beautiful Ann Kok plays the role of Mulan’s sister, Mulian and the handsome Pierre Png plays the Army Head. Catch their performances and support locals artistes!
3. The script has been adapted to cater to Singaporeans humour and tastes. For example local slang has been added to the dialogue that we can relate to.
4. The producer of the musical has also included some of the relevant social issues like compulsory military service (yes, Taiwan also have compulsory national service for men, but the duration is shorter than Singapore), gender identity and single parenthood in the musical.
5. Mulan The Musical brings delight to Singapore audience by coming up with 2 original new songs. We understand that this 2 songs took the composers a month to write, so don’t miss it! Bravo to Mulan The Musical for making the effort in coming up with new content and localising the play so that Singaporean audience are able to enjoy and relate to the musical better!
