{Exclusive Interviews: Chloe MacGregor as Twilight Sparkle and London’s West End Actor/Playwright Hugh Osborne of My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks!}
Come November, both children and adults in Singapore will be treated to the exhilarating world premiere of My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks! Singapore is only the second stop of this worldwide phenomenon, which will continue its world tour to Bangkok, Manila, China, Hong Kong and Australia.
Inspired by the only children’s entertainment franchise that boast of a huge international community of adult fans (the male fans are called Bronies and the females are called Pegasisters), My Little Pony gets a sparkling new look, sound and direction from an illustrious London’s West End team. The Musical gets a brand new script by University Lecturer/Stage Actor/ Playwright Hugh Osborne, whose work include credits in The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and The Importance of Being Ernest on stage; and direction and choreography by the award-winning Jamie Neale whose works include choreography on So You Think You Can Dance and the National Youth Ballet. Bringing the characters stunningly and vividly to life are talented actresses with rich theatre experiences including Chloe MacGregor as Twilight Sparkle, Anna Buckmaster as FlutterShy and Holly Sayer as Pinkie Pie.
Our Parenting World team is very honored to be able to interview Chloe MacGregor as Twilight Sparkle and London’s West End Actor/Playwright Hugh Osborne of My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks!
MEDIA INTERVIEW with Chloe MacGregor (C) as Twilight Sparkle
1. Can you share with us how did you get the role as Twilight Sparkle and where do you get your ideas and inspirations from when performing the role?
C: Of course! I got the role by attending an audition in London – we had to get through several rounds of singing, acting and dancing. I get inspiration from the original TV show. Twilight Sparkle is loved by fans of all ages so it is important that my performance matches the Twilight everyone knows and loves!
2. What are the joy and challenges that you faced with your role as Twilight Sparkle?
C: The story is so enjoyable so it is difficult not to smile and have fun and it helps to be part of such a great and talented company! The show is very high energy so it can be tiring but to be honest that is part of the fun of it all!
3. We are very excited to know that My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks is coming to Singapore for the first time! What can the audience in Singapore expect from this brand new musical and any interesting thing that you would like to share about the show with our readers?

MEDIA INTERVIEW with London’s West End Actor/Playwright Hugh Osborne (H)
1. We are very excited to know that My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks is coming to Singapore for the first time! Can you share with us what are the joy and challenges that you faced when preparing/staging for this brand new musical?
H: The joy, quite simply, lies in being able to bring such an engaging and appealing story to a whole new audience. Plus we have such a youthful, talented and enthusiastic cast, that the rehearsal process is proving to be a constant delight.
The challenge lies in respecting, and being faithful to, the original movie, while nevertheless surmounting the various technical difficulties of making a stage adaptation. I’m happy to say that our wonderful director / choreographer, Jamie Neale, and our equally wonderful designer, Jason Denvir, have met those challenges head on; and I’m confident that the show is going to be hugely enjoyable.
2. How would you make the musical appeal to both children and adults?
H: Luckily, the original songs from the Rainbow Rocks movie (by composer Daniel Ingram and lyricist Meghan McCarthy) are so great, that they really help engage both adults and children. Plus we have wonderful new arrangements of the music, by top Indonesian composer Indra Perkasa; which really help the spectacular dance sequences. (We are very lucky to have the luxury of a cast of 24 – a huge number of people for a show such as this – and the sight and sound of them singing and dancing together is something really special, and something that will really engage the whole family.) I’ve also done my bit, by trying to heighten some of the comedy, while keeping the plot zipping along nicely!
3. Which part of My Little Pony Musical inspires you the most and what life lesson in the musical has touched your heart?
H: The whole universe of MLP and the Equestria Girls is pretty irresistible. The simplicity and sincerity of the message on the importance of friendship is hard to argue with. Plus, that message of friendship is actively embodied by the huge fanbase (both children and adults), who together really do – I’m starting to discover – make the world a better place.
4. What is the one message that you hope children/adults will benefit and take away from the musical?
H: There’s quite a strong anti-bullying message in there, which I hope will make people think a bit. Plus, of course, the show is all about the magic, transformative power of music, so I hope people will also come away thinking about ways in which music, and the love of music, can really enhance the quality of one’s life.
5. What can the audience in Singapore expect from this brand new musical and any interesting thing that you would like to share about the show with our readers?
H: Our audiences can expect: great singing of great songs; a huge cast of young and talented singers and dancers; real visual flair and spectacle; wonderful choreography; a sprinkling of magic; lots of laughs; and – of course – some PONIES!
6. Lastly, what would you like to say to our Singapore readers and audience who are looking forward to catch My Little Pony Musical – Rainbow Rocks?
H: I’d like to say: a) thanks for coming; b) rest assured that we are all working flat out to bring you a wonderful, funny, moving and exhilarating musical show; c) tell your friends!
