A Journey to the Final Frontier
Experience close encounters in VR with an astronaut with Space Explorers: THE INFINITE at Science Centre Singapore.
Space Explorers: THE INFINITE builds on the success of the Primetime Emmy® Award-winning series Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, created by Felix & Paul Studios in collaboration with TIME Studios and NASA. The exhibition is based on more than 250 hours of 3D-360° immersive content filmed aboard the ISS, including astronaut testimonials and the first-ever spacewalk filmed in virtual reality (VR). Visitors will step into a multi-sensory, free-roaming VR experience where they can:
- Become an honorary astronaut: Experience spaceflight and life aboard the ISS, from breathtaking views of Earth to engaging in daily scientific activities.
- Explore a virtual ISS replica: Walk through a life-sized recreation of the ISS and witness the vastness of space firsthand.
- Experience the daily lives of astronauts in VR: Through exclusive footage and video diaries, get up close and personal with these brave explorers as they share their experiences and the challenges they face living and working in space.
- Embark on a thrilling spacewalk: Experience the awe of space through an exhilarating cinematic VR journey.
The view that guests will see once they don their VR headsets
This showcase offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in the lives of astronauts and witness space exploration in action. Since its debut in 2021, Space Explorers: THE INFINITE has welcomed over 400,000 visitors in cities across the U.S. (Houston, Tacoma, Richmond, Denver, West Palm Beach, and Charlotte) and Canada (Montreal and Vancouver). These numbers are a stark contrast to around 300 individuals who have had the privilege of visiting the real ISS. Now, it comes to Singapore, inviting Southeast Asian audiences to marvel at the wonders of space exploration.
Meet Elizabeth Ng Ziqi, Primary 5 student from Casuarina Primary School, the first Singaporean to have her song, Space Nomad, broadcasted in space and her mother, Jesslyn Wong, Founder of Tabernacle Health Group (THG).
Our editorial team met Elizabeth Ng Ziqi, a Primary 5 student from Casuarina Primary School, who made history by becoming the first Singaporean to have her song, “Space Nomad,” broadcasted in space. Elizabeth is a bright young mind with big dreams of becoming Singapore’s first astronaut. Together with her mother, Jesslyn Wong, who is the founder of Tabernacle Health Group (THG) and a trailblazer in the space industry, they inspire each other in their pursuits.
In an exclusive interview, we sat down with both of them to learn more about their remarkable achievements.
Q: Elizabeth, can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey in the space industry?
Elizabeth Ng: I’m Elizabeth Ng, from Casuarina Primary School. I had the chance to visit Johnson Space Center and SpaceX, which was an incredible experience! Since I was young, I’ve been inspired by my mother, who works in the space industry, and I’ve always wanted to follow in her footsteps. I’m also excited about a new elective in spacecraft engineering starting at Singapore Polytechnic.
Q: What challenges have you faced in pursuing your interest in space?
Elizabeth Ng and Jesslyn Wong: One of the challenges is that there is a lack of curriculum in space studies here in Singapore. That’s why it’s great that we are starting this elective in Singapore Polytechnic to give students a chance to explore this field.
Q: What was the most memorable part of your trip to the Johnson Space Center?
Elizabeth Ng: One of the highlights was watching astronauts undergo microgravity and underwater training in a huge swimming pool. I also had the chance to see a decommissioned space shuttle and received an Apollo 11 lunar medal from the family of Buzz Aldrin! That was truly special.
Q: Can you share with us the story behind your song, “Space Nomad,” being broadcasted in space?
Elizabeth Ng: I was playing with an AI module and came up with the melody. Using AI, I generated the lyrics, which I edited myself. My mother happened to have a project related to broadcasting on the International Space Station, so we used this music as part of the project. I’m really excited about it and hope it inspires other young people with similar interests.
Q: Jesslyn, as Elizabeth’s mother, how have you supported her in her journey?
Jesslyn Wong: Elizabeth has always been passionate about space, and I’ve done my best to support her by exposing her to opportunities. I also co-founded a startup, Wall Pie, where we work with organizations like SINDA and Mendaki to promote space education in Singapore. My goal is to foster a space ecosystem here and help students see a career path in this field.
Paving the Way for Future Space Explorers
As Singapore’s space industry is still in its infancy, experiences like Space Explorers: THE INFINITE and trailblazers like Elizabeth and Jesslyn are helping to build the foundation for future generations. With limited funding and few startups in the space sector, initiatives like these are vital to sparking interest and inspiring the next wave of explorers.
