“Detention class” is a dreaded word many of us remembered during our school days. It is a form of punishment commonly used by our schools for violation of school rules like coming to school late, not completing homework, rude to teachers etc.
When we first heard of the name of this musical “Detention Katong”, we are interested to know more about it. Certainly after watching the musical on the preview night we were impressed! This is one of the funniest and heart-warming local productions we have watched in recent years. This is not surprising as the casts include some of the most well-known local artists like Neo Swee Lin (Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd TV show), Suhaimi Yusof (Police & Thief TV show), Sebastian Tan (Broardway Beng musical) and also younger artists like Valerie Choo, Kimberly Chan, Melissa Gan, Natalie Yeap, Sharon Sum, Alyssa Lie, Munah Bagharib, and iNCH Chua.
The musical is based on a fictional all-girls school located in the eastern part of Singapore. The usual conflict of good girls vs naughty girls and teachers vs students in the school is captured well in the musical. The use of social media as a form of providing news to the students is demonstrated realistically in the story line. This musical is brought to you by Dream Academy which was founded by Selena Tan, who is also the producer of the musical.

If you are a fan of “The Teenage Text Book” movie in the late 1990s, then this musical “Detention Katong” will certainly be the one you should not missed as it tackles issues like school discipline, teachers-students relationship, friends and boy-girl relationship. It will certainly be an entertaining and fun night for you!
Synopsis of Detention Katong:
Amanda Chin is a straight ‘A’s student, teacher’s pet, and loved by all. One day, she gets herself sent to detention, and has never been happier. She is intent on showing us that good girls are not all good, and that bad girls can do good. Amanda’s mother, Linda, (Serene Chen, Public Enemy) who seems very secretive these days, sparks off this intrigue. All this while, the girls are surrounded by a hotchpotch of teachers: The Discipline Mistress of Pain (Neo Swee Lin, Phua Chu Kang’s Ah Ma), a hotshot know-it-all Principal (Darius Tan, Monkey Goes West), the School Counsellor in need of counselling (Sebastian Tan a.k.a Broadway Beng®) and the worldly-wise Malay & PE teacher (Suhaimi Yusof, The Noose).
Lyrics for Detention Katong were written by Selena Tan (Dim Sum Dollies & Sing Dollar), with a team of music composers headed by Elaine Chan (Dim Sum Dollies, Monkey Goes West & Sing Dollar), Benjamin Kheng (The Sam Willows), Sarah Cheng-De Winne (Brand New), Dave Tan (Electrico) and Roy Tan (of Leos and Virgos).
