Now fast forward to 2019, this wonderful musical is back in Singapore again! CATS has returned to Singapore from 17 December 2019 to 5 January 2020 for a strictly limited season only. This is without doubt, one of the most popular and longest running musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
One of the main highlights of the musical has to be the showcase of the different costumes for the various casts who dress up as Jellicle cats. Each of the costume is unique and different like Mr Mistoffelees whose costume is glamorous consisting of black velvet, glittering rhinestones comes with a black jacket fitted with electric flashing lights and Rum Tum Tugger is more flamboyant as he is the rock-star of the tribe. The cast look and act like cats that complement perfectly with their costumes and makeup. It is Purr-fect!
The musical is adapted from T.S. Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, the story is about the Jellicle cats who come out to play on one special night of the year to celebrate the annual Jellicle Ball. On this night, the leader of the group, which is the Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, will make a decision to choose one cat who will ascend to The Heaviside Layer and reborn into a new Jellicle life.
Although the story line is fairly simple, we were blown away by the stellar performance of the cast and of course the breath-taking sets, costumes and the awesome music. It’s amazing after almost five years, when we watched this musical again, we were still as impressed as ever. We were totally mesmerised by the musical especially the song, “Memory” which evokes strong emotion of nostalgia and adoration for the musical.
Of all the Cats’ characters on stage, our favourite has to be Rum Tum Tugger. He loves attention and is the most flamboyant cat in the group. He is big, always showing off, high energy and well loved by the audience. Another cat which we like is the leader of the group, Old Deuteronomy, who is like the wise old man of the group, well respected by everyone and behave like a benevolent King to his disciples. We also like the cheeky duo of Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, who’s always up to some mischief.
We thoroughly enjoyed this 2 hour plus fun and entertaining musical, and it’s not surprising that the audience at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands at the Gala night were absolutely captivated by the memorable music and songs, stunning costumes and outstanding performance by the cast. There were some element of surprise at the musical where a member of the audience was invited to dance along with one of the cast at the front of the theatre. Some of the Cats performers also appeared along the walkway of the theatre from the back to the front stage and the audience were delighted to see them up close when they ran past them. Catching CATS The Musical is definitely a Purr-fect way to end this exciting year!
