The Rock and The Bird is an inspiring story about friendships written by the winner of the Royal Commonwealth Society’s Prize for the Best Essay, Chew Chia Shao Wei and beautifully illustrated by Anngee Neo.
The book explores the friendships between the rock and the bird that blossoms beautifully after an annoying start. Before the bird came into it’s life, it was just an old rock that stood amidst the stretches of sand for a very long time. It knew nothing except the lapping of the sea waves. Then one day, the bird came to rest on the rock and it began to upset the rock as it was very noisy with its endless chatting.
Over the time, the rock and the bird get to know each other better. Their friendships blossom and strengthen. Then one day, the bird flew away and never return leaving the rock to ponder over the memories of his dearest friend.
About the author,
The brilliant, Chew Chia Shao Wei wrote this story for the Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition in 2009 when she was only fourteen years old, a Secondary Three student at Raffles Girls’ School.
Her story won First Prize, Class A. She proceed to continue her education at Raffles Institution and in 2012 earned the Rotary Club of Singapore’s Good Samaritan Award “in recognition of her spirit of true volunteerism above and beyond the call of duty”. She went on to start her freshman year at Harvard University in 2013. She has an older sister and a younger brother.
About the Illustrator,
The talented, Anngee Neo is a freelance illustrator whose work is in magazines, advertisements and children’s books. She is the illustrator of Former President SR Nathan’s The Crane and the Crab, published by Epigram Books in May 2013.
