Our Parenting World team was invited to a sneak preview of the coming Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) 2015 where we joined Chuah Ai Lin who is Singapore’s first and only professional story-teller guide for a SWF Families Parent-Child Workshop.
The workshop topic on ‘Cut, Shake, Roll’ uses stories, storymaking and word games to inspire and stimulate our sense of language in a fun and often imaginary way of telling a story.
Chuah Ai Lin shared various techniques to tell a story, first is “cut and tell” where you can use your imagination, brainstorm to form your own ideas and words to come up with a story while cutting a piece of paper at the same time. She demonstrated that at the end of her story, she has cut out the shape of a pumpkin in the picture above.
Children get to discover and use their imagination through a series of exercises aimed at helping them to CUT loose the Imagination, SHAKE up the Rules, and ROLL with the Unexpected! Second technique is “draw and tell” where children were given a piece of paper to draw and create a story at the same time. The boys were so excited to share their stories with Ms Chuah.
Even younger children can be good story-teller with just a piece of paper to draw and explore their imagination to come up with loads of ideas to form a story.
Third technique is “tear and tell” where you hold a piece of paper and tear as you are telling a story. It is really fascinating to know that we can tell stories in such interesting ways! Through this workshop, it is good for parents and children to spend meaningful time bonding and working with your children. Children are inspired and encouraged to explore their imagination and discover their abilities to create a story. They have a sense of achievement and are excited to share their stories after completing it.
