Singapore Zoo continues to offer fresh and captivating experiences for visitors of all ages. Launching on 9 August 2024, the third and latest behind-the-scenes tour, Backstage Pass: Elephant Encounters, promises an immersive and educational journey. Additionally, an enhanced edition of Breakfast in the Wild debuts on 5 July 2024, offering delightful morning encounters with some of the zoo’s most charming residents.
Experience Elephants Up Close Like Never Before
Discover the brand-new Backstage Pass: Elephant Encounters, a tour that takes participants beyond the regular visitor experience. This exclusive tour delves into the lives of the zoo’s five female Asian elephants, providing an intimate look at how they are cared for at the Singapore Zoo and their daily routines. Guided by a knowledgeable expert, guests will learn about the unique characteristics of these majestic creatures and see how the Elephants of Asia habitat incorporates enrichment devices to keep the animals mentally and physically stimulated.
Participants will venture into an off-exhibit area, coming face-to-trunk with the elephants and witnessing essential care routines, such as ‘pedicure’ or nail filing, to prevent overgrowth and infections. A highlight of the tour is a demonstration of Positive Reinforcement Training, where elephants are rewarded with food for voluntarily exhibiting specific behaviours, such as presenting their body parts for daily checks or offering their feet for a pedicure.
Under the expert guidance of the zoo keepers, selected participants will have the opportunity to make contact with an elephant, feeling its ears and the stiff hairs on its body. The tour culminates in a memorable feeding session, where guests can hand-feed the elephants their favourite treats—carrots and bananas—while learning fascinating facts about the herd and interacting with their keepers. This experience also reveals the unique quirks and friendships within the elephant group.
