Enjoyable Eggy Day Out at Jurong Bird Park

{Media Invite}

Hooray! We were at Singapore’s well-loved Jurong Bird Park to take part in its Eggy Day Out activities.

The Eggy Day Out carnival weekend from 18 to 20 April featured a plethora of eggs-periential activities to commemorate 50 years of tourism development and promotions in Singapore and to thank Singaporeans for their support.

Join us as we bring you around the Bird Park and take part in its activities.

Bird Park has specially arranged a series of educating and interesting activities for the children ranging from behind-the-scenes tour which highlights the colourful lories and how their special feed is being prepared, a trip down memory lane by Jurong Bird Park’s very own General Manager who shared with the participants how the park has evolved through his 38 years of experiences, learning how the eggs are incubated to the early stage of a bird’s life and join the celebrity eggs-cursion by MediaCorp Artistes and DJs.

We can’t wait to start our adventure!

First stop, we headed our way to Pools Amphitheatre, this is the place where the Bird Park conducts world-class bird shows.

We were at the Pools Amphitheatre to catch the Egg-lympics where little children can take part in the egg challenges and win medals for being an egg-lympian.

All of us enjoyed watching the performances especially the magic show.

Next we moved on to take part in Eggs-periment where we will learn about eggs through fun experiment and with the help of a “bird nanny” to find out how chick feeding is done.

“That’s so interesting, we can’t wait to feed a bird!”

The class was conducted at the Breeding and Research Centre where visitors will get to see the whole journey of how it all begins from an egg, to a chick and to become an adult.

This is the incubation room, the temperatures and humidity are controlled well to make sure that the embryos will grow well.

This is the nursery room where the adorable chicks are well take care off by the experts.

A closer look at the adorable chicks, the baby green parrot in the middle looked like it was flapping it’s wings to say hello.

“Hello baby green parrot, welcome to the world!”

The chicks are fed every two to three hours from 6am to 9pm every day.

Bird Park is having a contest to help name one of its newly hatched chicks at the Breeding and Research Centre where you will stand to win a Jurong Bird Park family membership.

Contest is from 18 April to 30 May 2014, you can get the entry forms at the Breeding and Research Centre.

Good Luck!

Food for the birds are being prepared in this room. Visitors can see how their food is prepared and it is important to make sure that the birds’ diets are monitored and controlled to ensure that they are kept at optimum health.

Weaning room for different categories of birds to help them grow up well and ready to join their respective family in the park.

The aquatic birds are being kept in this room before they are old enough to feed on their own and to be released to the park.

The children were excited and all ready to start their class at the Junior Eggs-Pert room.

The friendly instructor did a demonstration to show the class that the shell of an ostrich egg is strong enough to bear the weight of even an adult man.

Come and visit The Breeding and Research Centre (BRC) where everyone, parents and children can embark on an educating and interesting journey to learn more about the incredible life journey of the birds from its beginning, an egg to become an adult.

Did you know this story about young Thomas Edison, the great inventor?

Parents, it is good to encourage our children to be curious and inspire them to be creative and imaginative.

This is Birdz of Play, it is a bird themed water playground.

Our Parenting World, Gor Gor jumping for joy: “So cool! I can’t wait to get wet, zip across the Flying Fox and get splashed by the giant tipping bucket. Do remember to bring your swim wear and get ready to have plenty of fun!”

If you forget to bring your swim wear or other necessities, there is building with shop that sells the items that you need just besides the Birdz of Play which is the building with the clock as shown in the picture above. Hungry for ice cream and other treats, Ben & Jerry’s is just located inside in the building. Do take note and read the safety rules located around the water playground.

Let us show you around the bird park before we join the Celebrity Eggs-cursion:

“Yes, penguins, one of my favourites! This is the Penguin Coast. It is an indoor, climate controlled environment which is home to 4 types of Penguins, they are the Humboldt, Rockhopper, Macaroni and the majestic King Penguin.”

The King Penguins, they look so elegant!

The African Penguins, otherwise known as Jackass Penguins, one of the few species that has adapted to the tropics are housed in the outdoor enclosure near to the Penguin Coast. Along with them are the Cape Shelduck or South African Shelduck, and Gulls. This is an opportunity for you to get close to see the penguins.

Catch the penguins’ feeding sessions at 10.30am and 3.30pm daily at both the outdoor and indoor enclosures.

If you are interested in throwing a party with the penguins, find out more about Bird Park’s Dinner with the Penguins programme.

This is the Flamingo Pool, home to Chilean Flamingos and Caribbean Flamingos.

Aren’t they gorgeous? When you look at the flamingos closely and you will find that their unique beaks act like sieves to trap food such as algae, diatoms and aquatic invertebrates.

Get your opportunity to join in the snack time for flamingos at one of Bird Park’s feeding sessions at 1.30pm daily.

At the Bird Park’s wetlands, you will see the two giant birds which is the Marabou Stork and the Saddle-billed Stork.

This is the Flamingo Lake which we were told that it is one of the most photographed places of the Bird Park.

The lake is filled with hundreds of pink-hued Greater Flamingos and Lesser Flamingos live. The Greater Flamingos are the largest members in the flamingo family, both males and females have bright pink plumage with splashes of red on their wings. On the other hand, the smallest in the flamingo family at a height of 80 to 90cm. Their necks are shorter and thicker, and their bills are long and dark. It also has the record for the longest leg relative to their length of their body.

Macaw Island, Macaws live in pairs or flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. They are members of the parrot family. They can be noisy as they love to “talk” and some species can even imitate sounds and human words.

Macaws are so beautiful with their colourful feathers.

At the Bird Park, you can see many types of macaw, including the Scarlet, Green-winged, Blue and Gold, Hyacinth, Military, Red-fronted and Blue-throated varieties.

“Yay! We are ready to join the Celebrity Eggs-cursion led by Singapore’s well known MediaCorp Class 95FM DJ Glenn Ong. We have been listening to Class 95FM and it is a pleasure seeing Glenn Ong in person!”

We took a tram ride with Glenn Ong and our guide leader, Angelin who will bring us on a journey to Waterfall Aviary/South East Asian Birds Aviary.

Along the way we were introduced to many interesting birds like Scarlet Ibis which is a South American wading bird that lives in the swamps, wetlands and coastal regions.

The Birds of Prey where hawks, eagles and vultures live side by side in towering enclosures on this magnificent street of kings.

Visitors can take a stroll along the enclosures to observe the magnificent birds and read about their origins and stories.

We have reached the Waterfall Aviary where we can get to see the 30 metre high waterfall and stroll in the world’s largest walk-in aviary with over 600 free-flying birds.

So cool, isn’t it?

These pigeons look alike are so beautiful, blue in colour and with crown on its head. The Bird Park has 3 species of the world’s largest, and most handsome, pigeons which is known as the Common Crowned Pigeon, the Victoria Crowned Pigeon and the Scheepmaker’s Crowned Pigeon in 3 separate aviaries.

Angelin demonstrated to us how to feed the birds and encourage us to try.

It was the first time for many of us to see a full box of worms in all kind of sizes from the smaller thin worms to the bigger fat worms.

Angelin was very sweet and encouraging. Many of us plucked up the courage to pick up the worms to feed the birds.

This gorgeous male peacock opening its colourful tail feathers that spread out like a magnificent fan. Usually peacocks do that to court the females as females known as the peahens are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.

There are a wide range of birds at Southeast Asian Birds Aviary which is Asian largest collection of some of the region’s most exotic and endangered birds.
