Our Parenting World team is invited to visit the Singapore Sports Hub recently to find out more about its venues and facilities, and to introduce its various community programming initiatives.
Singapore Sports Hub was opened in June 2014, the Sports Hub is a fully integrated sports, entertainment & lifestyle destination, with facilities for the elite to the novice, such as the 55,000 seats National Stadium, Singapore Indoor Stadium, OCBC Arena, OCBC Aquatic Centre, Water Sports Centre, Sports Hub Library, Singapore Sports Museum, Splash-N-Surf and Kallang Wave Mall, among others.
Our team first visited Singapore Sports Hub during last year’s 2015 Southeast Asian Games when our editors were appointed as one of the official accredited media for the event. During the Games, we went to the various competition venues at the Sports Hub like the OCBC Arena for volleyball matches, OCBC Aquatic centre for swimming competitions, National Indoor Stadium for badminton matches and National Stadium for Track and Field competition and finally the 28th Southeast Asian Games Closing Ceremony.
This time round, we were invited by Singapore Sports Hub to visit some of the other facilities which we were not aware of. First stop for the guided tour was the Sports Hub Library located near the Indoor Stadium. Although this library is not part of the National Library Board group of libraries, it is well stocked up in books relating to sports, fitness and health. It is open 7 days a week including Sundays and public holidays.
Our next stop was the Singapore Sports Museum. If you are a fan of sports history, this is the place to go for Singapore and International sports history. There are different exhibits showcasing some of the key milestones in the various sports. There are also specimens of the various types of soccer balls used during the previous World Cup events.
Beside the Singapore Sports Museum is the Shimano Cycling World. This 650 sq m hub is an experiential and interactive gallery of all things cycling, it is truly the first of its kind and it was officially launched on 25 September 2015. Visitors to the gallery can look at the various types of bicycles over the years.
For shoppers, the Kallang Wave Mall has various types of retail stores including NTUC Fairprice supermarket, various dining outlets, fashion outlets etc. This is a shopping and entertainment haven to spend your time and get all your shopping needs.
In addition to being a shopping destination, those who like water play can visit the Splash N Surf venue at the sports complex or you can rent a canoe or kayak at the Water Sports Centre at Kallang Basin.
For many of us who were from the era of watching soccer at the old National Stadium, this new Sports Hub is an amazing transformation from the old to the new. With the integrated lifestyle shopping mall and various sports facilities, it is certainly a hip place to visit for everyone!
Come this June school holidays, on the 11 June, visit Sports Hub Community Play Day, where you and your kids can try out different sports, take part in fitness workouts or join the speedminton tournament (parent & child category), all for FREE!
