Some concern parents ask me “Isn’t it dangerous for my son to play under the hot son?” This question comes up when I mention that Gor Gor has his soccer CCA from 2.30pm to 4pm once a week, which is right under the hot afternoon son.
Daddy’s professional opinion as a doctor felt that is it is ok to play under the hot sun, provided you have taken the following precautions :
1. Water breaks : the coach must provide regular water breaks for the children. During these water breaks, the children should be supervised to drink water. If they do not have water in their water bottle, they must run to the nearby water cooler to drink water.
Children are more prone to dehydration than adults as their fluid storage capacity are lower than adults due to their smaller size. Thus they can dehydrate fairly quickly through sweating under the hot son.
2. Apply sun screen : exposure to sunlight is good for the child as Vitamin D is obtained from sunlight. However, long-term overexposure of sunlight may cause skin cancer in small number of people, especially the Caucasian population. Remember to apply sun screen to your child before the games.
With these precautions, it is safe for your child to play under the hot son, as long as its not too often (like everyday) and not too long duration of time.
This is the follow-up on the earlier post below on Gor Gor’s CCA.
Some parents think that “CCA” stands for “Chore Curricular Activities”, which is troublesome and not useful for the child. They prefer their kids to come back from school and hit their books immediately, instead of wasting time in school playing games. Many parents only send their child to CCA when they are compulsory.
Gor Gor is in Primary 1 now, and CCA is not compulsory yet. Yet we have decided to sign up Gor Gor to two CCAs, which are Soccer and Chinese Club. Why do we choose these two CCAs for Gor Gor?
First of all, Daddy as a doctor and educator, he believes in a “all rounder” education. That means the child should also learn about games and culture, in addition to academic knowledge. He have seen many obese children growing up to be obese adults because they never have the interest of playing games when they are young and thus it is very hard to ask them to exercise when they are older.
For choosing a games for Gor Gor, there are quite a few options like swimming, tennis and soccer. Gor Gor, like most boys, loves soccer. We feel that soccer is also good for him as it teaches him teamwork with his friends. Isn’t soccer dangerous? You may ask. Well, if you play the game safely with proper precautions, your child should be safe. That means wearing proper shin guard and obeying the rules of proper tackling. The common injuries associated with playing soccer in children are ankle sprain and facial injuries from knocks from the opponents. These are generally mild injuries which recovers fairly well.
The other CCA we chose for Gor Gor is Chinese Club. The club introduces the children to the cultural aspect of the Chinese language and Chinese history which is quite useful for a primary school boy.
Remember to let your child enjoy his primary school life and joining the right CCA will help him build his character, physical fitness and emotional happiness.
