You would have heard of the new smart shopping technologies introduced to enhance customers shopping experiences by Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) and The National Productivity Council (NPC) including the new campaign to encourage DIY culture known as “We Are InDIYpendent campaign”.
The campaign seeks to encourage Singaporeans to use and be comfortable with using self-service options. The campaign aims to feature three key benefits of using self-service facilities which are easy, fast and flexible. This initiative is useful to deal with a tight manpower situation and rising competitive business environment to come up with technologies to reduce manpower and improve their productivity for our local retailers.
Many supermarkets like Cold Storage, NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong have implemented the DIY self-checkout counters. Look for the self-checkout counters when making your payment, you will find that it is easy to use and you can complete your purchases quickly, no more being struck in a queue.

About the Hybrid Self-Checkout System:
– Officially launched in June 2015
– Accepts cash, NETS or credit cards during self-payment
– Benefits to the consumer: faster checkout time, better service as frontline staff’s work process is further simplified, improved payment accuracy
– Benefits to the business: frontline counters can be open at all times as there’s no more need for manual tallying, easier to rotate and hire new staff; information on customers’ usage in the area of payment can also be collated and used for further data analysis to fine-tune its operations; efficiency and accuracy achieved

My children loves paying for the grocery using the self check out machine. With 2 super hyper children shopping with us, having this diy self check out counter means less screaming and yelling at them to stop running about, because they loves helping me to pay for the grocery.

I like DIY because it is convenient for me in terms of waiting time and payment. As I often buy mostly 2 – 3 items from Sheng Siong, I dreaded queuing behind people with a lot of items. Furthermore, unlike many self check out machines which I used before, Sheng Siong self check out machines are one of the very few that offer cash payment. For that, I am very grateful as I am more of a cash person rather than a card person. I hope that they will include this system in the Sheng Siong outlet near my residence.

I prefer DIY because the queues are shorter, buying things now take lesser time. I can now pack things according to my needs, and save more plastic bags.

Segar Supermarket has DIY checkout. The best thing about it is the shorter waiting time as the queues are shorter. The checkout is also easy to use and user friendly. Sheng Siong can also save on the manpower needed, and hopefully can pass on some of the savings to the customers in terms of cheaper items at Sheng Siong!

I love these DIY check-outs and hybrid systems because there are shorter queues and it is faster. And now Sheng Siong is giving discounts to encourage customers to use this system. Cold Storage does the same thing. And Fair Price gives you goodies like a can of drink. But best of all, I love the independence and my child loves helping out with the scanning.
The nearest one would be The verge hypermarket with DIY! DIY is the fastest and practically no need to queue, queue! 🙂

I first tried Sheng Shiong’s DIY system by chance at the Woodlands branch. It is simply wonderful. It is so much faster and more efficient. I really like how efficient everything is, and this system is surprisingly smooth. There was a long queue on that day and I was just about to leave seeing the long queue. However, I noticed that the queue was moving so fast, and upon closer inspection, I realised it is the queue for the DIY System. I was so amazed by the sheer efficiency and effectiveness of it, that I abandoned my idea of leaving and carried on with my shopping. I love this DIY System so much because it is so fast and efficient! Best of all, it is so user friendly!
I am living in Tampines and I frequent the Sheng Shiong outlet at the Tampines branch beside polyclinic, and the Bedok branch at the reservoir and central. I look forward to this DIY System to be implemented across all Sheng Shiong outlets, so frequent shoppers like me can enjoy this marvellous system!
